  Snippets Rainforest Challenge 2006

1. First time in the Rainforest Challenge (RFC) that a Chief Minister flew into the campsite in a helicopter to make rendezvous with the participants. The Right Honourable Dato’ Seri Mahdzir Khalid flew into Pedu Lake with Kedah Chief Police Officer in a helicopter at Mong Gajah, Pedu, where he participated in Special Stage (SS) 19 and flagged off SS 18 at the edge of the lake.

2. The longest continuous uphill climb (approximately 4kms, but seems like 40kms), and toughest ever in the history of RFC - was from Puncak Janing to Bukit Kachi range (average height of 448 meters). Round every corner is another hill to climb. A difficult and challenging attempt, which saw some teams taking up to 36 hours to complete the 8kms track. A most scenic jungle experience with flora, fauna and massive trees, ruts, rocks and winching. Due to its ascending nature and breathtaking beauty, it’s called the Stairway to Heaven transport stage.

3. The most number of Special Stages (SS) ever done, a total of 23 from start to finish. 9 SS were carried out at the Prologue area (Suka Menanti, Alor Star), 4 SS were held at Puncak Janing, 2 at the exit of Stairway to Heaven, 2 SS at Road to Nowhere campsite off Kg Durian Burong, 2 SS at Pedu Lake, 2 SS at Predator of Ulu Muda, 1 SS at the Twilight Zone (TZ) and 1 SS at exit of TZ base camp off Kg Landai.

4. Total participants (in all categories) from 26 nations were recorded in this 10th edition coming from UK, Ireland, Sweden, Denmark, France, Germany, Portugal, Italy, Austria, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, South Africa, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Singapore, Philippines, China, Korea, Australia, Argentina and Malaysia.

5. Total of 300 participants were registered for the event, 250 completed the route; the rest went for part-time and for opening and prologue special stages only.

6. 94 4x4s entered for the proper jungle event out of 120 at the opening ceremony comprising of 27 competitor vehicles, 22 from scout/marshal crew, 4 from event HQ, 2 from police signals corps, 26 from press/official vehicles, 8 from touring and 5 from other support.

7. German off-road/racing portal, Marathonrally.com carried live daily reports of the event for most of the 10 days. 2 motorcycle riders from KCE acted as courier service in and out of the jungle to carry footages for national news coverage.

8. The Twilight Zone of Ulu Muda is 36kms long, took three days to complete. It is divided into Predator, Swamp Thing, Mother of All Ruts, By-pass Alley, 1,000 Rivers, Terminator, Lucifer’s Backyard and Scorpion’s Sting. Untamed territory, awesome, challenging, raw beauty of the jungle, massive trees and boulders, tight and twisting trails, awkward gullies, river canyons, three landslides, lots of trees, huge vines and big thorny plants, steep ascends and descends. If wet, it will take a week to get through. It also gives a creepy and eerie feeling. Those who completed the route are all winners. This is ranked a Top Three among the toughest RFC tracks.

9. Press members who completed the Twilight Zone came from South Africa, France, Portugal, Sweden, Poland, India, China, Philippines, Singapore, Romania, Greece, Argentina and Malaysia.

10. 27 competitor teams were registered at the staring line, 23 were in contention half way through the event and only 19 completed the Twilight Zone. All scout/marshal groups also completed the TZ.

11. The best combination group of scout and marshal group (comprising X-Men and officials from UK, Australia, Sweden, and Ireland) working in cohesion with Competition Manager, Chief Scout and Course Master.

12. Longest drive of 20km through sugar cane/rubber plantations at Padang Terap on 30th November before reaching Mong Gajah (Pedu Lake). This section is named the "Green Carpet" drive of scenic greenery all around.

13. Three father-son teams completed the event. Team 113 (Johor - Malaysia), 120 (Kelantan - Malaysia) and Team 135 (Denmark).

14. Sri Lanka, Lebanon and Turkey are the three new countries to join in the RFC. Only Sri Lanka sent two teams, TV crew and supporters this year, while the other two sent in press and observers.

15. The transport stages of Stairway to Heaven, Pedu Lake and Twilight Zone of Ulu Muda are most picturesque, challenging and awesome at the same time.
